Contemporary Bathroom Inspiration

Im working on a job at the moment re designing 2 bathrooms in a beautiful classic yet contemporary property.
Thought id share a few shots from the 'inspiration files' for this job!
I always believe in designing things that will last & aren't necessarily the 'in thing' at the time! especially when it comes to rooms like the bathroom or kitchen that you are going to spend a fait amount on & want them to still be relevant for many years!
Although i admit its not an easy task to predict what will still look good in 10yrs time!

'The Travels of Vivienne' by Alan Walsh

I recently spoke to Alan Walsh from Custom Canvas Company & the artist behind this delightful series titled 'The Travels of Vivienne'. Alan is an English born artist who resides in Sydney. His love & passion for travelling is obvious in his art; he uses bright & bold colours in a simplistic style depicting iconic locations around the globe. The Travels of Vivienne is his first solo exhibition & follows the glamourous route of a woman travelling through Europe in the 1930's - Summer in St Tropez, paris fashion week & on the boats of Monaco....
I asked Alan what the inspiration was behind the series (apart from the divine French Riviera lifestyle of course!).

He tells me he was 'really inspired by people finding happiness in their lives; once you are happy in yourself everything else will fall into place. Obviously we are not all lucky enough to travel the world like Vivienne, however if people are having a tough day, I want them to be be able to look at my work & take their minds elsewhere with the glamour, the bright colours & beautiful places - even if just for a moment'.

After recently returning from an amazing French honeymoon these definitely make me smile, thats for sure!
For more information & to purchase any of these tre's chic prints head on over to Custom Canvas Company.
Oh & did i mention how damn affordable these beauties are? Check it out for yourself! x

New Arm Candy

After debating for months about what watch to buy i finally decided on one - went into David Jones, tried it on...then bought it on Ebay from Bloomingdales for less than half the price! The main thing i was worried about was that it'd look to big on my tiny wrists (the only tiny part of me haha) so i made sure i ordered the style that was the 38mm one not the oversized 48mm. I had to laugh when it arrived - they sent me the bigger version (not the smaller one which was listed!!!).  oh well - guess ill get used to it :)

ODC Insider - Kerrie Golias of Voyager Candles

A few weeks back i discovered Voyager Candles - being a nut for a scented candle, i couldn't believe i hadn't found them earlier.
The packaging is truly unique, & now that i have the divine Augusto candle - inspired by the gardens of Capri (takes me back to my honeymoon) in my hot little hands, i can confirm the scents are just as magical as the packaging!
Each candle is hand poured, using a special blend of soy, coconut & beeswax, with pure cotton wicks (sounds amazing right?!)
They come in 5 scents; Augusto (Capri), Belleville (Paris), Alexandra (Melbourne), Tirta (Bali) & Imperial (Tokyo).
Kerrie Golias, the founder of Voyager, was kind enough to have a chat with me.

What was your background before launching Voyager?
I modelled for 25 years, and was very lucky to have the most wonderful experiences travelling to and living in many different parts of the world. My love of travel, fragrance and beautiful products came from this time. You could say that these years were my education!

We all love an amazing scented candle – would you mind sharing the process you went through in creating your own range?
I began researching everything I could about candles – how to make them, the different waxes and their properties, wicks, fragrances…
Let me tell you, it’s an art form! Suddenly, the kitchen was full of homemade candles, and we were eating a lot of takeaway…
My vision for Voyager began to take shape – I wanted my candle range to be unique in every way, and I found some wonderful
people in my suppliers, who shared this vision and helped me create Voyager.

What sets Voyager candles apart from other scented candles on the market?
I guess the first thing that people would notice and find unique is the Voyager glass; no other candle brand has used double-walled glasses, which give the candles a beautiful floating effect. Voyager’s distinctive fragrances are developed together with a perfumer,
and are inspired by my time travelling. I would like to think that people connect to the story behind Voyager, and can see that it’s not just ‘another candle brand’!  There is no palm wax or paraffin used in the candles, as it was important for Voyager to fit in with my ethical values… and everything in the candles is the very best quality possible!

What is your favourite part about running your own business?
I have to say that Voyager has given me a huge amount of confidence in my abilities, and, after living a rather flighty and nomadic life,
it is nice to feel grounded and purposeful. I am also meeting some really great people.

And the hardest part?
Sometimes I struggle a little with prioritising. And I think I may need to let go of my tendency towards perfectionism…

What does your schedule in a typical day at work look like?
I usually write and reply to emails in the morning, and then my days usually involve lots of driving to and from my suppliers and visiting my retailers. In the afternoons, I generally pack my orders (from our dining room table!) and send them out. Then it’s more emailing and researching, figuring out what the next step for Voyager will be… At the moment, it’s seven days a week… and I’m loving it.

Who or what inspires you?
I am constantly inspired by travel, art, nature, design, architecture, film, photography, music…

Any favourite websites/blogs/magazines?
Too many! But I love The Design Files, Hello Sandwich (I’m very nostalgic for Japan…).
Brain Pickings is great… Persolaise Perfumes, Interiors Magazine.…
Actually, I am pretty happy with my nose in any design, travel or interior mag!

Outside of work, what do you love to do in your downtime?
I love watching live music.
I do wish more musicians toured Australia, as I think we miss out on so much great music purely because of geography.

Drink of choice?
A very generously sized glass of Tempranillo.

Honeymoon snaps - Paris (part deux)

A few more from our week in paris - everywhere you look there is something beautiful to photograph!

Amazing doors everywhere

And then of course there was our day at the Final stage of le Tour de France!
I bought ben tickets to the VIP marquee as a wedding gift (ok, so it was a bit for me too hehe)
It was such a great day - amazing after all these years of watching on tv to be there on the Champs Elysees. There was champagne, cocktails & amazing french food all day & at the end we even got to meet a few of our favourite riders! And of course i wore yellow :)

Compulsory bike store visits!

And compulsory Laduree Visits! :)

We got around everywhere using the Velib bike system Paris has - basically racks of bikes all over the city that you swipe your credit card as a deposit & can ride from place to place! Such a great system, everyone uses them and you ride in the traffic with the cars & (unlike in Australia) are given lots of respect & room from the cars & busses. One of my favourite memories was riding about 15km back to our hotel from the Eiffel tower at midnight -  the streets were deserted and all the beautiful buildings lit up!

Stocking up for a picnic in the Luxembourg Gardens

Ben walking past one of our fav bistros in the Marais - Les Philosophies

Dinner at Cafe Constant - one of the best we had in Paris!
And only a 10min walk over to the Eiffel tower after!

....Where i had a panic attack on the stairs & could only get to the first level!
Guess i forgot how scared of heights/falling i am - weird!

Au Reviour Paris - the next day we headed to the magical Loire Valley!
